How to Find the Tempo of a New Song

Tempo is the underlying rhythmic pulse of music that seemingly keeps all of the notes and rests organized. Each song's tempo can be generalized as fast or slow, yet also be as specific as a certain amount of beats per minute. In the past, the tempo was marked on the sheet music with standard terms, mostly derived from the Italian language, such as adagio, allegro and presto. Musicians simply knew what speed was intended by the word. However, modern methods specify what type of note corresponds with a certain BPM. A quarter note at 60 BMP should correspond with each second of a minute.
