What happens at the school pep rally to upset Tyray in The Gun by Paul Langan?

At the school pep rally, the basketball team is introduced, and Tyray is one of the players. However, when his name is called, the crowd boos him. This upsets Tyray because he feels that he is being treated unfairly.
