The performing rights of musicians and artists are protected under copyright law. Therefore it is essential when planning an event involving music performance that a music license is acquired.
There are currently three performing rights societies protecting the interests of artists. These are the BMI, SESAC and ASCAP. If you would like to use the music from each society's catalog, a license for each specific one needs to be obtained.
Charity events do not need a license for music, provided the performer is not receiving payment for the event and the music is not being used commercially.
Any venue that has background music or facilities used for performances must obtain a license. It is usually the responsibility of the venue owner to ensure this happens.
When planning an event, make sure the music license is current and all paperwork has been correctly filled out. This is to prevent copyright infringement, which can lead to the even organizer being sued.
