For a professional pianist, working as a church accompanist is one of the most steady and readily available sources of income and employment. When considering work as a church pianist, or just preparing to work with one, it's important to be familiar with the essential functions of the job.
  1. Choir Accompaniment

    • A church pianist is usually expected to accompany the church's choir during rehearsals and performances. Most churches have one of each a week.

    Services and Organ

    • Church pianists are responsible for any piano playing that takes place during Sunday worship. They may also be expected to double on organ.

    Contemporary Worship Music

    • Some churches have a contemporary music worship music group that shares worship service performance opportunities with the choir. The church's pianist may be expected to a part of this group.

    • A church pianist often also serves as accompanist for rehearsals and performances of children's choirs.
