How to Facilitate a Drum Circle

A drum circle requires only two basic elements: people and drums. Drums are easy to find in a lot of small music stores and in the open-air markets outside of the United States; they are readily available in the markets of the Middle East, in particular. They can also be bought at festivals such as the Renaissance Faire. Learning to play a drum requires only a sense of rhythm.

Instructions

    • 1

Find people who play the types of drums used in drum circles; these are drums such as bongos or darbukkas. If you don't have drummers readily available, sites such as Craigslist will allow you to place ads looking for drummers for a drum circle. Music stores and venues may also have boards for people looking for musicians. Alternatively, you may contact established drumming groups such as the King David Peace Drummers if you would rather go see a drum circle rather than organize one.

    • 2

Contact the drummers that you know and/or the drummers who respond to your ads.

    • 3

Gather the musicians who show interest in the drum circle. Play together for a time to test group personality and musical dynamics. It is important to make sure that a group gets along well enough and can handle conflicts of opinion and style.

    • 4

Choose a location and a time for your drum circle. This can be a one-time thing or a regular series of drum circles in a specific place. In Tel Aviv, for example, there is a drum circle on the beach every Friday night on the sea side of the former Dolphinarium.

    • 5

Advertise your drum circle to draw an audience.
