How to Set Up Stage Lighting for Tours

Stage lighting can add a level of professionalism rarely seen in common variety band tours. By bringing along portable lighting apparatuses to venues without stage lighting, the band can give a show with more theatricality. Setting up stage lights will mean erecting the lighting stand(s) and attaching the lights to the lighting strip by using clamps installed on the lights. The lights can be spotlights with different color films, or osculating strobe style lights. It is important to check with each venue to make sure they can accommodate the power requirements of the lighting.

Instructions

    • 1

Discuss with the venue manager where an appropriate place is to set up the lighting. Set out all the equipment in the lighting area. Make sure the power cords reach the power outlets with at least six feet of slack. Use extension cords if necessary, but no more than one per light.

    • 2

Set up the base of the lighting apparatus, but do not block the band from the audience view. Open the legs of the base piece as wide as possible and make sure they rest on even ground. Tighten the tension knobs on the bases to keep the base in position.

    • 3

Connect the lighting strip -- the long metal rod section that the lights hang on -- to the top of the bases. Tighten the tension knobs on the lighting strip to keep them stabilized on the base.

    • 4

Attach each light to a different part of the lighting strip. Tighten the clamps attached to the light to the strip. Plug the power cords to the power outlets. Raise the lighting strip 4 feet using the extender on the bases and tighten the tension knobs to keep it from falling or drooping down.
