How to Play Live Backing Tracks

Backing tracks commonly are used to fill out the sound of a live performance with instruments and vocals that are not performed live. For example, a performer might sing and play guitar live on stage, but then use a backing track to fill in the drums, bass and other instruments. This allows a smaller number of performers to have a larger and more complex performance than would have been possible if only using the live instruments. You can produce your own backing tracks by using an electronic production suite with virtual instruments or live recordings. Depending on your setup, you also may want to use a click track if you need know your tempo before the backing track begins or need to keep exact tempo throughout the song beyond what the backing track provides, which is especially useful for drummers.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the backing tracks and click tracks for your set in your audio system. If you are using a CD player, insert the appropriate CD or CDs. If you are using a computer, queue the backing tracks in your preferred audio player.

    • 2

Set the click track's output to one channel and the backing track's output to another, if using a click track. Send the click track signal only through to the performers, but send the backing track signal to, both, the performers and the audience.

    • 3

Test the tracks with your live elements to adjust the mix between the backing tracks and what you are performing live. Ideally, the backing track blend seamlessly with the live elements. If using a click track, also test to be sure that the click track can be heard through the monitors but not through the house speakers.

    • 4

Reset anything that is no longer in its proper place after checking the sound so that it is prepared for the actual performance. Save settings on the mix if you altered something.

    • 5

Press "Play" on the backing track when ready to perform the song.
