Instructions

    • 1

Launch your audio editing program and import mp3 files of recordings you would like to use in your project.

    • 2

Crop and save 1- to 3-second samples of the mp3s into a folder made specifically for your project. Give each file a unique name.

    • 3

Load these samples, along with other relevant samples that you may already have, into your sequencing program. You will need samples typical of techno like heavy kick drums, tight snares, sharp hats and synth instruments.

    • 4

Build the basic format of your project using the "Four on the Floor" template--a kick drum beat for every count. Set the time signature to 4/4 (hence the name four on the floor).

    • 5

Insert a hat hit half a count behind the kick drum hits and set the beats per minute to 120 bpm or higher.

    • 6

Synchronize your musical sound samples with the beat by adjusting the tempo to match. Use your studio headphones for precision in aligning the beat with the samples.

    • 7

Add a bassline and additional percussion to your pattern. The bassline should compliment the sample. Setting the bassline around the bass notes of your musical samples is a simple way to create a bassline.

    • 8

Polish your pattern by composing synth riffs to it. Try mixing live instrument samples along with the synthesized samples.

    • 9

Create more patterns based around the original. You can create variations of the rhythm, melody, bassline or instruments to create patterns to use as a chorus, outro, break or any other elements for the project's structure.

    • 10

Organize the patterns into a song and smooth out any rough transitions. Export the project to an mp3 file.
