Instructions

  1. Account Setup

    • 1

Establish an account at Amazon Advantage (see Resources for the link).

    • 2

Complete an online form with basic contact and payment information, and create a user name and password.

    • 3

Ensure that you own all distribution rights for the material being sold. If you don't own the rights, do not use this service.

    Adding Product

    • 4

Sign into your account. On the main Advantage page, look to the left column, under "Items," and click "Add an Item." If you are going to add more than 50 items, click the "Add Items in Bulk" link.

    • 5

Select the product type, and then fill in the UPC code from your bar code. Amazon will also assign your product a separate code, the Amazon ASIN number, to be used for Amazon purposes. Click the "Submit" button.

    • 6

Enter the details of your CD--the title, artist and so on. Expect to wait at least a week before your item appears on the Amazon site.

    Images

    • 7

Return to the main Advantage page and, in the left column, click on "Image Upload."

    • 8

Pay attention to the requirements: JPEG or TIFF file; RGB (Red, Green, Blue) format, not CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black); and at least 500 by 500 pixels, with the optimum size being 1,000 pixels or more. Having your image rejected adds unnecessary time to the process.

    • 9

Ensure the artwork is of high quality. This is being presented to your potential customers. Also pay attention to the Amazon naming convention; use the ASIN number in its name to ensure the image is placed correctly.

    • 10

Use the "Upload" tool on the bottom of the page to upload your art to Amazon.

    Add Content

    • 11

When your item is active, click on the "Update Item Content" link on your main Advantage page.

    • 12

Enter the information you want to display on your page. Among the important items are reviews, track listings and a description of your CD.

    • 13

Check your entries for spelling and grammar.

    Orders

    • 14

Wait for your item to be activated. You will receive an email with an order from Amazon. Usually this initial order will be for one or two copies.

    • 15

Print out the address label and pick sheet that Amazon provides you. Include the pick sheet in the package.

    • 16

Request increases to the order by the publisher via a form on the Advantage website. You'll want to do this in advance of gigs, radio appearances or any other event that could increase demand for your CD.

    • 17

Add music previews to your page. Amazon will convert samples of your music into MP3s and place them on your sales page for customers to preview your music.

    Selling Digital Downloads

    • 18

Sell your digital downloads on Amazon either through its "Create a Space" service or through a third-party company such as CD Baby. As part of its fee, CD Baby will provide digital versions of your CD to online sellers such as Amazon.

    • 19

Navigate to the Create a Space website to do it yourself (see Resources). Create an account.

    • 20

Choose the "Musicians" link, and then the "MP3 Download" link.

    • 21

Follow the online directions to enter in your song information and upload your tracks.
