What Is Sound Engineering?

There was a time when all sounds were natural, whether they were heard in nature or recreated through a recording device, and never tweaked. With advances in technology, however, sound engineering became possible. This is the artificial creation of sounds and pieces of audio through the use of computers, machines and other electronic means. Those working as sound engineers apply their skills to a number of different fields, and new technologies allow more freedom and diversity in the field.

  1. Mixing

    • DJs and other musicians often mix together beat samples or pieces of music to create something original. This is another feature of sound engineering.

    Sound Effects

    • Sound engineering can include creating artificial sounds for special effects. These are often applied to video games and movies that require distinct sounds easily created using computers.

    Sound Modification

    • Sound engineering can also involve the recording of natural or ambient sounds. These are then modified using electronics to create a specific and tailored version of that sound.

    Tools

    • Sound engineering employs the use of a number of pieces of equipment. These include computers, analog tapes, desktop workstations, analog-digital transferers and software and hardware integrators.

    Live Sound Engineering

    • Live sound engineering involves planning for live events. It includes preparing mixed accompaniments and setting up wiring and speakers.
