How Do I Transfer Music From an Old Computer to a New One?

Transferring music files from an old to a new computer is a simple process with the help of an external hard drive. After transferring the files, you can keep a backup of all of your music files on the external hard drive in the event of your new computer ever crashing.

  1. For Mac

      Plug your external hard drive into your old computer.

      Double-click on the external hard drive icon that appears on your desktop.

      Drag and drop the individual audio files onto your hard drive that you would like to transfer, or drag and drop the folder onto your hard drive that contains the audio files you would like to transfer. Depending on the number of files you are transferring, this could take anywhere from a few seconds to an hour or so.

      Eject the hard drive from your computer by dragging it over your recycling bin and letting go. When properly ejected, the recycling bin will turn into an eject symbol and the hard drive icon will disappear.

      Plug your external hard drive into your new computer.

      Double-click on the external hard drive icon that appears on your desktop.

      Drag and drop the audio files from your external hard drive onto the desktop of your computer.

    For PC

      Plug your external hard drive into your old computer.

      Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, or click on "Start" and select "My Computer."
