How to Get a DJ Gig

Disc jockeying is an art-form that has come far from its roots in radio and its explosion onto the hip hop scene in the early 80's. As a DJ, you may be confident in your skills but are lacking the simple know-how to obtain your first gig. There are many options available to you when you know where to look and how to market your craft. Diving into the world of entertainment can be scary, but remaining confident and knowledgeable will help you find work.

Instructions

    • 1

Market yourself in the local community. Whether you are simply posting flyers or giving out demos of your mix to radio stations, it is imperative that you get your name out there. Shining light on your personal brand will help you to gain acclaim that is much needed in the industry. Handing out demos to patrons at nightclubs, community centers, and even high schools, if allowed, will help bring business to you.

    • 2

Diversify your skill-set. Realize that if you limit yourself to hip-hop, house, techno, or any certain type of music you will severely minimize your chances of a gig. Avoid this by diversifying the type of music you play and have on hand in your collection. Be open to small or large events, as any work can help you get your name out to the public. Weddings, graduations, birthdays are ideal targets for new DJs.

Network in order to build your brand with promoters and owners. One of the best ways to obtain a gig is to know the people who can easily put you in that position. Getting to know owners of venues you would like to play or promoters who know many owners can help to open doors for your career. Talk to these people directly and let them know your intent. Have a demo on hand when approaching these figureheads as they will often want a demonstration of your talent before giving you a chance.

Invest money in an event. If you are finding it hard to promote or network, throwing your own bash can help to attract potential clients. Have professional cards with your contact information to handout at the door. Advertise a hook to get people in the door such as free or discounted drinks. You may have to rent out a facility but in the end you will save money by not having to pay a promoter if you are able to obtain more gigs.

    • 5

Advertise affordable prices. Gauge your price on the type of event you will be hosting and the people who will be there. For instance, you will not have a cover charge for a birthday party; instead charge an affordable flat fee depending on the age of participants. Charge more for older teens, young adults, and middle aged parties and less for kids and the elderly.
