How to Change an M4P File to MP3

M4P files are audio files bought from the iTunes music store that are encoded with Digital Rights Managment (DRM). A file encoded with DRM cannot be digitally converted legally, because doing so would "crack" the encoding, which is a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). But there is a way to copy an MP4 file that is legal because it does not crack the DRM, and all you need is iTunes and a blank recordable CD.

Instructions

    • 1

Open iTunes and create a playlist with the M4P files you want to convert to MP3.

    • 2

Insert a blank CD into you computer.

    • 3

Click on the "Burn Disc" button in the bottom right corner of iTunes. Select "Audio CD" as the disc format and click "burn." iTunes will burn a traditional audio CD with the M4P tracks you selected.

    • 4

Import your newly created CD into iTunes, you can choose to overwrite your existing M4P files or leave them be. The files imported from the CD will not be encoded with DRM, and can be treated like any other MP3 file.
