How to Make Music Beats With Software

Beat-making software is everywhere. Even if you know almost nothing about music, computer music technology can help you easily make your own beats. Many audio programs offer a simple interface to get started composing your own beats on your home computer. Making beats requires audio or beat-making software and a newer computer with sufficient power to run the programs. When it is time to get down to making the beat, understanding the basics of the sound types and rhythms used in beat making can make it easier to get what you want out of your beats.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer sound card, speakers and at least 2 gigabytes of RAM
  • Beat-making program

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire a software beat-making program, such as Garageband, Reason, Cubase, Pro Tools, FL Studio or Arturio Hip Hop Producer.

    • 2

Install the program. Most installation software is on a CD or DVD included in the product package, but some installation software programs are available for download online. Run the installation program and follow the instructions. You may need to restart your computer to complete the installation.

    • 3

Open the program and start a new project. Some beat-making software automatically opens a new project. If it doesn't, the command to open a new beat making project is usually in the "File" or "Edit" menu.

    • 4

Lay down four tracks in the program using the "Add Track" or "Add Instrument" function. Choose a bass drum, snare drum, cymbal sound and a loop for melody.

    • 5

Program the bass beat into the bass drum track. In 4/4 time (standard time in most pop music and beats), bass beats are often used on all four beats of the measure, on the first and third beat or on the second and fourth beat. Program a bass beat you like into the track and let it run a few times to make sure you are happy with it.

    • 6

Program the snare beat. Snare beats often run opposite to the beat of the bass, so if the beat is on the first and third beat in the bass, the snare is often on the second and fourth beat. The snare is used as an accent and does not necessarily have to help lay down the time feel of the beat.

    • 7

Program the cymbals, which can be used as accent beats, or they can be given a steady tap to create a time click. Cymbals, especially high ones, are best used on all four beats, on the second beat or on the fourth beat of a 4/4 measure. Play the whole beat together to make sure you like it.

    • 8

Add a loop that gives a melody or focal point to a beat. Beat-making software suites have built-in loops that can be used to compose a new song. Keep in mind that all artists who have the software have access to these loops. Be sure to make adjustments or add to the loop to make the sound unique to you.
