How to Make Custom Music CDs

Making custom music CDs is easy if you use iTunes on a Mac or Windows Media Player on a PC. Both programs are free and come pre-installed on your computer. Simply import your digital music files into one of these programs and use the software to help you make your own custom music CDs.

Instructions

  1. On a Mac

    • 1

      Open iTunes and click “File,” “New Playlist.” After doing this, a new playlist will appear in the column on the left-hand side of iTunes.

      Click on this playlist to rename it “Custom Music CD 1.”

      Import the music you would like to put on your custom music CD into iTunes. Do this by clicking “File” and selecting “Add to Library.” Then browse through your computer and select the music files that you would like to import into your iTunes music library. Repeat this process until you have imported all of the music files you would like to put on your custom music CD.

      Drag the music files from your iTunes library and drop them into the “Custom Music CD 1” playlist located in the left-hand column of iTunes. When you're finished adding music files to the playlist, click on the playlist in order to re-arrange the files within the playlist. When satisfied with the song order, click “Burn Disc.” From the dialogue box that appears after clicking "Burn Disc," choose “Audio CD” and then click “Burn.”

      Insert a blank CD-R when prompted by iTunes.

      Eject the CD when iTunes is finished burning the CD. You have now made a custom music CD.

    On a PC

      Open Windows Media Player and click the “Burn” tab located in the navigation at the top of Windows Media Player.

      Import the music you would like to put on your custom music CD into Windows Media Player. Click “File” and select “Add to Library” to do this. Then browse through your computer and check-mark the folders that contain the music files you would like to import into Windows Media Player. Click “OK” and the music files within these folders will be imported into your Windows Media Player library.

      Drag the music files from your Windows Media Player library and drop them into the “Burn List” located in the column on the right-hand side of the Windows Media Player “Burn” tab. When finished adding music files to the “Burn List” drag the individual songs up or down within the "Burn List" to place them in the order you would like them to play on your custom music CD. When finished, click “Start Burn” located in the bottom right hand corner of Windows Media Player.

      Insert a Blank CD-R into your computer and Windows Media Player will proceed to burn your custom music CD.

      Eject the CD when Windows Media Player is finished burning the CD. You have now made a custom music CD.
