How to Set Up a Wireless Mic

Wireless microphones have the advantage of not needing to be physically connected to an amp or receiver. Whether you are setting up a wireless mic for a music gig, conference or for personal use, you can typically avoid the usual tangle of wires around your feet. There are many types of wireless microphones, with varying sound quality. Some use bluetooth to make a wireless connection, but this is limiting as there must be a clear sight line between receiver and mic at all times. Far better are wireless microphones that operate using a radio connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the wireless microphone and receiver are turned off. Insert a fresh battery into your microphone. Plug the receiver into a power socket.

    • 2

Connect the receiver to your computer using XLS cable. Plug the female end of the XLS cable into the output on the receiver and the male end of the cable into the "microphone" socket on your computer.

    • 3

Turn on the receiver. If the receiver has Automatic Frequency Selection, press the "Select" button and wait for the receiver to find an available frequency. If not, use the cursor buttons to find an available frequency, manually. The green light on your receiver will stop flashing once you have selected an available frequency.

    • 4

Turn on the microphone. Press the "Sync" button, if the microphone is capable of auto-tuning into the receiver's frequency. If not, use the "Mode" and "Set" buttons on the microphone to tune it into the same frequency displayed on the receiver.

Speak into the microphone clearly. Check the green "RF level" or meter on the receiver. It should peak at the loudest points. Walk around the room. Adjust the position on the receiver or its antenna if the RF level indicates it is not picking up your voice clearly.
