Plug the AC adapter into the circular port on the left end of the rear of the JS-5. Plug the other end of the adapter in an outlet.
Plug speakers or an amp into the two circular ports labeled "Output." If you are only going to use mono mode, plug the cable into the output port labeled "L(Mono)." You can use headphones instead of speakers or an amp, just plug the headphone jack to the left of the "Output" ports.
Flip the power switch located next to where the AC adapter plugs in.
Press the "Song" button in the middle of the keyboard to start playing a song. Use the style buttons, located to the left of the "Song" button, to choose the style of song and then use the dial at the top of the machine to choose the specific song you want to play. Press the "Play" button to start the song, and the "Stop" button to end it.
Press one of the four "Part Mute" buttons to mute that section of the song. If you mute both "INST 1" and "INST 2" you can use the JS-5 as a rhythm machine that plays just drums and bass.
Connect a guitar to the "REC INPUT" slot on the back of the JS-5 if you want to play along with the songs. Adjust the switch next to that input to the "Guitar" position. You will now hear your guitar along with the song as it plays.
Press the "Song" button, choose a "User" style and use the dial to select any user song with an asterisk to create your own song. Press the "EZ" button, then choose a style by turning the dial and pressing "Enter." Use the dial to choose a chord template, tempo and key, pressing "Enter" after each selection. Your song will now be available for you to play.
Select a user song, like you are about to play it, but hit "REC" instead to record your guitar playing onto the track. Press the "Audio Track" button. Then adjust the recording level with the dial in the upper-right corner of the machine until the "Input" graphic on the display advances beyond the dotted lines. Press "Start" to start recording, and "Stop" to finish.
