Differences Between Logic Pro & Logic Pro Express

Logic Pro is Apple's professional home recording software, which functions like a complete recording studio with multi-track recording, mixing board channels and effects processors. Logic Express is the light version of Logic Pro, which looks almost identical to its larger counterpart, but with a few specific variations.
  1. The Mixdown

    • Logic Pro allows you to mix audio in surround sound, using the 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 surround configuration. Logic Pro's built-in Surround Panner allows you to set the exact location of each audio signal. By contrast, Logic Express allows only a two-channel (left and right) mixdown.

    Network Compatibility

    • Logic Pro can combine the processing power of multiple computers on a single network to render your audio projects. Using a method called distributed audio processing, Logic Pro provides seamless integration between multiple computers, which is especially beneficial for large projects. Logic Express does not offer this feature.

    System Requirements

    • Logic Pro 9 and Logic Express 9 both require Mac OS X 10.5.7 or higher, with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. However, Logic Express requires only 8 gigabytes of available hard drive space, while Logic Pro requires 9GB. If you wish to install the extra plug-ins included with Logic Pro, such as the Jam Pack collections, sound effects and surround music beds, you will need additional hard drive space beyond the initial 9GB. The extra plug-ins are not included with Logic Express.

    External Software Compatibility

    • Logic Express is a completely self-contained program, used for recording, mixing and mastering music. Logic Pro is part of a larger software bundle called Logic Studio, through which you can expand upon your Logic Pro projects by creating videos or live music arrangements. While Logic Express is limited in its external capabilities, Logic Pro integrates with the bundled Soundtrack Pro and MainStage programs at the click of a button.
