How to Use XP-30 as a MIDI Controller

Roland's XP-30 synthesizer offers a variety of live performance and compositional tools for musicians. Sophisticated digital audio workstations such as Logic and Reason allow users to control a variety of tones and parameters within the software package using an external MIDI controller. The XP-30 interacts with these programs using the included MIDI output port on the back of the keyboard. By following a few simple steps, you can quickly configure your XP-30 for use as a MIDI controller.

      Connect the XP-30 to your computer using a MIDI to USB cable. These cables are available for purchase at popular electronic equipment retailers such as Sam Ash and Best Buy.

      Launch your preferred digital audio workstation and create a new MIDI track. DIgital audio workstations allow users to create and record audio and synthesized sounds. If you do not own a digital audio workstation, popular products such as Logic and Reason are available for purchase through a majority of audio equipment vendors. Follow the documentation provided with your workstation if you are unsure how to create a MIDI track.

      Select the XP-30 as the designated MIDI input controller with the settings menu of your workstation. If the keyboard and cable are functioning properly, your workstation should immediately recognize the presence of the XP-30.

      Test the MIDI capabilities of your XP-30 by pressing a key on the keyboard. Although the tonal characteristics may change depending on the sounds assigned to your MIDI channel, audio should be output each time a key is depressed. Select the sound bank you wish to use within your workstation and control their output using the XP-30.
