Music DJ Mobile Programs

Advancements in computer hardware and audio technology have allowed a new generation of DJs to hone and refine their craft using a completely different ensemble of performance hardware than previous predecessors. Although turntables and mixing consoles are still very much in use, several DJ software programs allow performers to mix, scratch and entertain an audience using only a computer. These software packages provide an affordable alternative for DJs or musicians on a budget.
  1. Virtual DJ

    • Virtual DJ emulates the classic DJ deck and mixer configuration using visual representations of these hardware devices within the main interface of the program. User can create "bins" for audio tracks which they can use to store songs for their current performance. As with any software DJ program, the ability to load tracks into the virtual decks directly from the computer's hard drive eliminates the need for physical CDs. A free version of the software is available for download on the program's main website. Premium versions of the program include a diverse range of effects processors and other utilities.

    Serato Scratch Live

    • In similar fashion to Virtual DJ, Scratch Live incorporates virtual DJ decks and song libraries into its main interface in order to streamline the performance process. Scratch Live features a visual waveform display that can be used to scratch or sync tracks loaded into the main decks. Although Scratch Live can be operated without third party extensions, the software is optimized for use with Rane DJ hardware. These mixers and interfaces allow DJs to control the course of their set without having to constantly interact with the computer.

    Traktor Pro

    • Native Instruments' Traktor Pro software incorporates looping utilities and advanced effects processors that can be used to add variety and depth to mixes. Like Scratch Live, Traktor Pro is optimized for use with Native Instruments' Kontrol X1 and Maschine. These devices function as equalizers and MIDI controllers which can be used to edit the sonic characteristics of your mix as well as to insert loops or other programmed samples into the live playback. Musicians interested in this software package can download a free trial of the program from Native Instruments' website.

    Ableton Live

    • Ableton Live is unique among the DJ software packages available in that it does not utilize digital models of traditional DJ equipment. DJs using Ableton in live performance load small melodic and rhythmic motives into the software and arrange them in whatever order they desire during their live show. Unlike traditional DJ practices, this method of musical assembly allows DJs to create remixes and entirely new compositions during their live performance.
