How to Set Up a Personal In-Ear Monitoring System
In-ear monitoring systems allow performers to hear themselves play with a crispness of sound beyond what a traditional wedge monitor can offer. Being able to accurately monitor your sound is essential for knowing where you fit into a mix, and for feeling in control of what is happening on stage. Any performer that has experienced difficulty hearing himself during a stage performance knows how disorienting it can be, and should take steps to set up a reliable system. In-ear monitors allow you to hear in precise detail exactly what is happening so that you can feel confident. Setting up your personal monitoring system is relatively simple.

1
Plug the monitor output on the mixer into the input of the in-ear monitor transmitter using the appropriate cables. From the mixer you can determine the exact mix that you want to send to the in-ear monitor transmitter. The transmitter will then be able to send that signal to the receiver for your in-ear monitors.

2
Plug your in-ear monitors into the receiver. Wireless in-ear monitors allow you to move freely around the stage, but you must connect them to the receiver of the signal, which you can often carry around with you on a belt pack.

Adjust the monitor mix on the mixer so that you hear all parts clearly in proper balance.
