How to Hang Club Speakers

Filling the club floor with loud dance music is not a problem--if you have enough high-amp speakers. However, placing and hanging the speakers in a noise-efficient way requires a fair bit of thought. Due to the directional nature of sound and its tendency to bounce off of objects, hanging your club speakers in a careless way can result in high-pitched feedback, silent spots and--more importantly--unhappy club goers.

Place and arrange the speakers around the club to ensure maximum noise efficiency. Always consider the placement and direction of the speakers before you do anything else because it will determine which spots in your club need more or less noise. Speakers for clubs are known as short-throw units, which means that they have an approximate 50 degree projection angle--any club goers who stray outside of this 50 degree cone will hear the bass and miss the mid- and high-range frequencies (like vocals). Aim each speaker at an important part of the room and try to cover the whole floor. A square dance floor, for example, would benefit from a speaker in each corner. Avoid pointing the speaker directly into the center of the floor. Instead, place each unit at a slight angle facing the adjacent clockwise corner. Do this with all four units and more of the dance floor will be covered by mid- and high-range noise.

Hang your club speakers at a high enough level to avoid a loss of mid- and high-range frequencies. Speakers that are set up to the same level as the crowd will not penetrate the dance floor with enough noise. Those clubbers closest to the speakers will disperse any higher frequencies and absorb the excess sound. Anyone towards the back of the dance floor will hear nothing but sizzle (a noise created by obstructed higher range frequencies). Hang your speakers above the crowd at an elevated level. This will avoid any dispersed frequencies and the concentration of noise found at the front of the speakers. Elevate the speakers to a minimum of one foot above the tallest club goers, e.g. eight or nine feet above the floor.

Insert ceiling or wall mounts to support the weight of the speakers. Find a joist or stud in the ceiling/wall by running a stud finder along the surface. Screw the bracket base or mount into the ceiling/wall and ensure that the mount is securely and tightly in place. Most club speakers that are designed to be hung should be sold with a strong and sturdy enough bracket. Those not sold to be hung may still be light enough for a support, so check with your speaker's retailer for further information.

Attach the arm bracket or support arm to the speaker unit before attaching it to the ceiling or wall base. Ensure that the unit is safely and firmly in place before playing any music through it. Intense vibrations may cause the unit to shake and fall off the wall or ceiling.
