Create a list of personal traits you want in your book club members that you believe will mesh well and foster good discussion. Decide if you will ask people you know to join your book club, interview strangers or both.
Ask the people you know if they'd like to join your book club, or post advertisements in local places -- such as libraries, grocery stores, coffee shops, tattoo parlors, comic book shops and college campuses -- that attract the personalities types you desire. Interview respondents to determine whether each fits the discussion personality of your book club.
Ask everyone in the book club to create a list of the kinds of books they'd like the group to focus on, such as fantasy, romance, nonfiction, British literature and women authors. Vote on the kind of books to be read prior to the first meeting, and ask everyone to prepare a book list for the chosen topic.
Create a list of possible meeting locations, such as libraries, restaurants, coffee houses and members' homes, to fit the size and personality of your group. Call each place on the list to determine whether the venue's schedule meets that of your club and whether the venue charges for use of the space.
Contact your group with the location and time options. Vote on the most appropriate location for your book club to meet, and schedule the space.
Contact members of the group with directions and carpooling information, if appropriate.
Discuss at the first meeting how much time each member is willing to devote to the club and how frequently your group will meet. Vote on the first book and determine whether members of the group will be responsible for refreshments.
