How to Blend Music Loops

The introduction of digital technology into the music industry ushered in an era of sampling and looping. Many people devote their entire music talent to producing loops and samples for sampling musicians to use, while others sample their own loops, using turntables and Digital Audio Workstations, DAWs. Sampling and blending music loops is both an art form and a highly technical process.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the .WAV file into your Digital Audio Workstation.

    • 2

Use the DAW’s zoom feature to hone in on a particular part of the .WAV clip. For example, zoom and click on the beginning of the third measure in a music clip that is in 4/4 time.

    • 3

Mark the start of the third measure by using the DAW’s cue feature. Find the first measure of the clip, and add that to the cue list.

    • 4

Highlight the clip from the first cue list to the second, and trim the selection. The sampled music loop remains by itself.

    • 5

Insert the second .WAV file into the DAW.

    • 6

Zoom in on the beginning of the measure that you are blending the first loop. For example, cue up the first measure of the clip until the start of the third measure, then highlight and trim.

    • 7

Paste the two loops together, and press "Play" to ensure the loops perfectly flow together. Repeat the process for additional looping of other tracks.
