How to Remove a Foot Thump From a Recording

Removing a foot thump from a recording is one of the more difficult challenges an editor will face. It isn't always possible to remove the thump without destroying the audio itself. There is one technique using compressors and filters that may allow an editor to remove a thump, but it may cause more damage to the sound of the recording. Audio editors help clean up audio and sometimes are capable of removing or at least masking the mistake.

      Download and install Audacity. Audacity is an audio editing program with several features that make it possible to edit audio.

      Drag and drop the audio into Audacity. This will analyze and import the audio into the program for editing purposes.

      Open the "Effect" drop-down menu and select the "High Pass Filter." This filter will remove all of the sound below a certain frequency. Since a thump is likely going to create low frequencies, set the Cutoff frequency in the dialog box to 192 Hertz and press "OK."

      Determine if the thump was removed. If it was not removed, try raising the frequency 48 hertz at a time until the foot thump is removed.
