How to Remove Vocals From Beats

Removing lyrics from backing beats and song tracks is a difficult process. Because producers master and mix the individual elements of a song long before it is sent to print, the finished product is a singular track file that can't be taken apart. Nearly all beat tracks; however, record the vocals in a specific channel that can be removed by reversing the song's output from stereo to mono.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the beat track or song file with any audio editing software program. Download a free Internet program if you don't already have one installed on your PC. Audio editing programs, such as Audacity, Wavosaur and Wavepad Sound Editor, are easy to use and produce the clearest sounding results.

Look at the audio waves on the program dashboard to make sure the track has been recorded in stereo. If there are two horizontal lines of audio waves, then the beats have been recorded in stereo and are editable. One line of audio waves mean that the song is in mono, and the vocals cannot be removed.

Select the entire right side of the stereo beat track by clicking and dragging the cursor from the track's beginning to the end. With all editing programs, the right-speaker side of the track always is displayed as the bottom row of audio waves.

    • 4

Inverse the right side of the beat track. Select the "Inverse" option in the "Effects" or "Edit" menu, depending on the software. In Audacity, select the "Effects" menu button and choose the "Invert" option from the drop-down menu. The right channel of the track changes slightly, so don't worry about inverting the track again.

    • 5

Merge both stereo channels into a singular mono track. This compresses the vocals of the track into an inaudible layer of sound between the beats. Click on the "Edit" or "Properties" menu option, and choose the "Convert" command. Make sure that "Mono" is selected in the output box before merging.

Save the new track, and play it to confirm the vocals have been removed. Avoid overwriting the original beat track so that you have two copies: One with vocals and one without.
