Locate the Tempo Bar at the top of the FL Studio application. Hover the pointer on the "140.000" tempo using your computer mouse. FL Studio automatically sets the tempo of new projects at 140 beats per measure. Click and drag upward to increase the tempo, or drag down to decrease the tempo. Increasing the tempo speeds the song up, while decreasing the tempo slows the song down.
Click the "Channels" header in the top-left portion of the application. Select one of the available drum sets provided by FL Studio. Choose the "Fruity DrumSynth Live" link to open a classic 808 electronic drum set. Select "FPC" for a realistic-sounding drum set. Once the virtual instrument is loaded, locate it in FL Studio's "Step Selector."
Right-click on the virtual drum set's name within the Step Selector. Choose the option titled "Piano Roll." The Piano Roll allows you to create musical patterns with the virtual instrument. In the space provided, create a drum pattern. Each key is mapped to an individual instrument in a drum set. Create the pattern by inserting multiple notes along each key until a drum pattern is created. Make sure that the pattern includes a kick drum, snare, high hat and other essential percussion instruments.
Locate the Pattern Bar to the right of the Tempo Bar. The Pattern Bar allows you to create multiple patterns. The multiple patterns are used to create a full song with a variety of instruments. Click and drag upward on the Pattern Bar's number to change it from "1" (the drum set pattern) to the number "2."
Click the "Channels" header again, and select another virtual instrument. FL Studio 9 includes several instruments that may be suitable for the song. Select "Sytrus" to add a synthesizer instrument to the song. Choose "FL Keys" to add a virtual piano to the song, click "Boo Bass" to add a virtual instrument or add "Toxic Biohazard" to add an arpeggiator-type synthesizer to the song.
Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5 until all of the desired patterns have been added to the song. Press the keyboard's "F5" key to reveal the playlist. The playlist is used to organize all of the created patterns into a song. Select the brush icon in the top-left portion of the playlist. Left-click the mouse to paint an instance of the current pattern onto the playlist. Repeat the process for the remaining patterns.
Click the "Song" button located at the top of the FL Studio application. Press the "Play Symbol" to preview the created song in real time. Adjust the patterns in the playlist as necessary. After adjusting the song, press the "Ctrl" button and the "R" button at the same time to bring up the rendering window. The rendering utility creates a song based on the pattern's organization in the playlist.
Create a name for the new song, set a location for the song to render and click "Save." In the pop-up window, click the "MP3" button (in the top-right portion of the window) to render the song in the popular MP3 format. Click "Start" to begin rendering the file. Allow a few minutes for the song to render onto the computer.
