How to Make a DJ Mix Song

Making a DJ mix song involves combining two songs to create a new one, also known as a remix. There are number of ways and tools to remix songs. Most DJs remix on the fly using a mixer and turntables. This will not be as "clean" a remix as those done by producers in the studio, but these types of remixes are great for events and parties. Remixing can challenge the DJ's skill and creativity.

Select the tracks. The tracks will be the two songs that are remixed into one. The songs should complement each other. This does not necessarily mean that they must be from the same genre, but the songs should fit when remixed. The DJ will need to be creative and have a good ear when selecting the songs.

Load the two tracks into each deck (turntable). Play both songs at once and beat-match them. Beat-matching means that both songs are playing at the same BPM (beats per minute). This will help make the songs sound good together. Once the beats are matched, the DJ can determine how to mix the songs.

Mix the songs. Mixing involves playing some parts of one song and other parts of another. For example, the base line may be played from one track while the vocals and melody can come from another. Which parts to play from either track are up to the DJ and depend on the songs selected. Use the mixer's EQ settings to select what parts of each song to play. The EQ will help balance the different sound frequency levels, such as low, mid and high.

Practice the mix several times. Each time the DJ plays the mix, she will likely notice some ways to improve it, such as where to cut vocals or where to tweak frequencies. After the mix has been practiced several times, the DJ should feel confident mixing it live in front of an audience.
