The MPC 2000xl accepts Akai MPC60/60II files stored to external drives and diskettes. Sound (.SND) files contain individual sounds, while Sound Set (.SET) files allow users to load groups of sounds. Sound Set files are auto-mappable to the 16 MPC touch pads, while .SND files require manual mapping. Once mapped, .SND file parameters may be altered using the built-in performance editing tools and effects library.
The MPC 2000xl features a 3.5-inch disk drive that allows users to load .SND, .SEQ, .ALL, .MIDI, .PGM, .APS, .WAV and .SET files stored to 3.5-inch diskettes. Users browse the LCD display menu with the directional buttons and function keys to locate compatible file types on inserted diskettes. Loaded files are mappable to the 16 MPC touch pads, where their parameters may be altered using the built-in performance editing tools and effects library.
The MPC 2000xl's 3.5-inch disk drive also allows users to save .SND, .SEQ, .ALL, .MIDI, .PGM, .APS, .WAV and .SET files to 3.5-inch diskettes. Users browse the LCD menu with the directional buttons and function keys to set the 3.5-inch disk drive as the save destination. Saved files are transferable to compatible MPC instruments or digital audio workstations, where their parameters may be altered using sophisticated audio editing tools not contained in the MPC 2000xl.
In addition to its 3.5-inch disk drive and optional flash ROM, the Akai MPC 2000xl's rear panel features a 50 pin SCSI interface slot where users may connect external disk drives with 50 pin SCSI cables. Files saved to connected SCSI drives are transferrable to other SCSI compatible devices. Files loaded from SCSI drives are mappable to the 16 MPC touch pads, where they may be altered with built-in effects.
