How to Make a Perfect Equalizer

Equalizers help musicians tune their output to sound crystal clear, without the natural imperfections created in music. To some, equalizers make music sound inauthentic. However, they have become ingrained in the modern music making process. Equalizer settings require different calibrations for different sounds but there are some guidelines for the perfect setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your equalizer or open the software on your computer. For iTunes software users, there is a special methodology you may employ.

    • 2

Play a few beats into the equalizer and listen to the sound. If you are using iTunes, select "Make Preset" from the drop-down menu, then title the equalizer. For manual or other software systems, use a similar method to create a permanent setting for the equalizer.

    • 3

Adjust the equalizer with the following settings:

      db +3, +6, +9, +7, +6, +5, +7, +9, +11, +8 db

    • 4

Choose a selection of different songs or notes and play them into the equalizer. The sound should be improved from the original beat that you entered. Slowly adjust the calibrations one by one to determine which sound best showcases the music.

    • 5

Use trial and error to find out which calibration is best for you. Save the preset each time you find a setting that you like for a specific song, type of music or instrument. Note this preference in the saved name.
