How to Sync a Boss DR-5 to a Recorder

The DR-5 Dr. Rhythm Section is a drum sampler and rhythm sequencer by Boss. Although capable of functioning as a stand-alone device, the DR-5 can interface with a variety of MIDI-compatible devices, including ADAT and other format recorders with MIDI clock functionality. The DR-5 can be controlled as a MIDI slave or act as a MIDI master device. In the majority of cases, the DR-5 will act as MIDI master when syncing with a recorder, but many recorders include MIDI clock master functionality.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the DR-5 and the recorder off before making connections between them.

    • 2

Connect a standard MIDI cable between the DR-5’s “MIDI In” port and the recorder’s “MIDI Out” port.

    • 3

Connect a second standard MIDI cable between the DR-5’s “MIDI Out” port and the recorder’s “MIDI In” port. Turn on both devices.

    • 4

Press the “MIDI” button while holding the “Shift Erase” button on the DR-5’s main panel. “MIDI” appears on the DR-5’s display.

    • 5

Press the “<” and “>” buttons to scroll through the MIDI options until the screen reads “Sync.”

    • 6

Turn the “Tempo/Data” knob to select the sync mode. “INT” syncs the recorder with the DR-5’s MIDI clock, making the DR-5 the MIDI master; “MIDI” syncs the DR-5 to the recorder’s MIDI clock. Select “MIDI” to sync the DR-5 to the recorder's MIDI clock.

    • 7

Start the recorder’s MIDI clock transmission to start the DR-5’s playback. As long as the DR-5 is slaved to the recorder, you will not be able to control the timing or playback from the DR-5 – those parameters are disabled in this state. If you are using the DR-5 as MIDI master, pressing “Play” will trigger the MIDI clock and start the recorder.
