The artist Johnny Lee was the man who sang the country song, "Lookin' For Love." Born John Lee Ham on July 3, 1946, in Texas City, Texas, Johnny Lee grew up on a dairy farm. He loved rock 'n' roll and even started a band during high school called Johnny Lee and the Roadrunners. He worked mainly by playing cover songs in Texas clubs and bars.
Johnny Lee read the lyrics to the song while staying in a motel in 1979. It was originally about an elementary school classroom. Realizing the words mirrored his own life, he wrote some music to them, and presented it to his producer.
The song was on the soundtrack to the popular film, Urban Cowboy, starring John Travolta. At one point in the film, Travolta's character exclaimed "Hey! Turn that up! That's my favorite song!" in reference to "Lookin' For Love."
The song has been certified Gold, which means it sold at least one million copies.
The song was made a parody by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live, who was playing the role of "Buckwheat." It was also covered by the band, Sawyer Brown.
