Plug one end of your bass cord into the amp and run the other end into your tuner; run another cord from the tuner to your bass. Use the tuner to detune your top E string a whole step down to D; if you have a 5 string bass, ignore detuning since you can play the low D on the third fret of your B string.
Use a pick to strum the following notes, two at a time, to create the beginning of the intro: open D and G string third fret; D string third fret and G string second fret; both D and G strings on the fifth fret; D string eighth fret and G string seventh fret. Change the final notes to D and G strings seventh fret on the second strum-through.
Pluck the open D string to create the droning note you hear in the recording; hammer-on from the open D to the D string tenth fret (C) and hammer-on from there to the D string octave on the twelfth fret. Immediately play the F on the tenth fret G string, open D, E on the ninth fret, open D twice, the hammer-on, tenth fret, ninth fret and finally the twelfth fret.
Play the above stated riff throughout the song (paying close attention to the recording will help you learn the rhythm of the riff). The song's second, heavier riff occurs at the 2:16 mark on the recording. If you play with a four string bass, play the open dropped D, the F on the third fret on the top string followed by the G on the fifth fret.
Play the heavy-sounding open D on the third fret of the B string if you play with a five-string bass, playing the F and the G notes on the first and third frets of the E string, respectively.
