1980s New Orleans Metal Bands

During the 1980's, multiple metal bands based in New Orleans, Louisiana, began to form and rise to prominence. Among these artists were Crowbar, Eyehategod, Exhorder and Soilent Green. These bands all helped to define a new kind of metal, as they combined hard edged guitar riffs with elements of other popular southern genres like blues and jazz. These bands were also willing to slow down the tempo of their songs at times, something others in the genre did not routinely try.
  1. Soilent Green

    • Soilent Green, a band named after a movie, formed in New Orleans in 1988. Despite forming and playing live shows in the New Orleans area much earlier, the band's first CD did not come out until 1995. Members of Soilent Green also played with other late 1980s New Orleans bands. The version of Soilent Green that finally released albums was different than the original lineup, as they had a different bass player and singer. Soilent Green has released albums for Dwell Ministries, Relapse Records and Metal Blade.

    Eyehategod

    • Sharing a guitar player with Soilent Green, Eyehategod started playing in the New Orleans area in 1988 before releasing their first album, In the Name of Suffering, in 1992. The band temporarily broke up in 1993 before regrouping to release two more albums. While they have never technically announced their disbandment, Eyehategod has not released an album since Confederacy of Ruined Lives in 2000. As of January 2011, all of the band's records have come out on the Century Media label.

    Crowbar

    • Crowbar began in the late 1980s as a New Orleans metal band called The Slugs, though they changed their name shortly thereafter. The band started out on the Pavement Music record label and was compared to their fellow New Orleans musicians, Eyehategod. The band went on to work for other record labels that include Crash Music, Spitfire Records and Candlelight Records. In total, they released eight albums and one live compilation.

    Exhorder

    • The New Orleans metal and hardcore band Exhorder started out in 1986 with the idea of using heavy guitar riffs at a fast pace and then playing them out slower to build suspense. The band broke up in 1994 and only released two albums in their time together. Both Slaughter in the Vatican and The Law were released for Roadrunner Records.
