How to Spread My Mixtape

Mixtapes are demos that aspiring musicians -- most often rappers -- make to show off their talent. Because many are produced on a shoestring budget, mixtapes are often inexpensively produced voice-overs on top of the instrumental versions of popular songs. Though mixtapes may once have been distributed on cassette, they're now generally available as MP3 downloads. A new artist can spread the word about their mixtape by following key steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply to every website that sells and promotes mixtapes and request permission to upload yours. Make a video featuring a song from your mixtape and upload onto sites such as youtube.com and bliptv.com. Create a website or blog dedicated to giving your mixtape exposure.

    • 2

Share the links to your blog, video and the mixtape sites where your music can be heard by posting them on Facebook and Myspace as well as other social media sites. Encourage your friends to spread the links to their friends. Do this frequently to give your mixtape maximum exposure.

    • 3

Send music blogs and magazines within your musical genre promotional information about you as well as links to your music. Ask them to write an article about you or mention you in a larger review of new artists. Post any reviews you receive on the profile pages of the social media sites you belong to to build buzz.

Rent a space and throw a large party. Invite as many people as possible. Have friends distribute cards that display the link to your MP3. Perform live songs from your mixtape. Contact companies that sell products such as soft drinks or sneakers to your target market and offer them a chance to sponsor your event which will offset the costs.
