How to Rant Like Andy Rooney

"60 Minutes veteran," Andy Rooney has been sharing his views on-air for over two decades. Andy Rooney's commentaries at the end of each "60 Minutes" episode, titled "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney," express everything from his mild annoyance with bottled water brands to his confusion over the unusual names of presidential candidates.

Instructions

Start off writing about simple topics. Before he had his own "60 Minutes" segment, Rooney wrote and produced commentaries that were narrated by others, including "An Essay on Doors," "An Essay on Bridges" and "An Essay on Hotels." Rooney gradually worked his way up to more complicated topics with later commentaries, such as "An Essay on Women" and "An Essay on War."

Make lists to prove your point. Rooney often illustrates his rants with lists, to prove how many variations there are on his topic of annoyance. He's listed everything from various types of milk, to bottled water brands, to sports mascots.

Use politically-incorrect terms for races. Rooney often laments the changes of different words in the English language for the sake of political-correctness. In one commentary, he explained the transition of the word "Negro" from a proper term to an unacceptable one.

Lean left. Despite poking fun at political correctness, Rooney identifies himself as a liberal. He told Larry King, "There is just no question that I, among others, have a liberal bias. I mean, I'm consistently liberal in my opinions."

Acknowledge you've crossed the line. After the 1994 suicide of singer, Kurt Cobain, Rooney commented on Cobain's "drug-infested life," and asked of Cobain's grieving fans, "What would all these young people be doing if they had real problems like a Depression, World War II or Vietnam?" Rooney later admitted that his statements were "unfair."
