How to Be Spiritual Like Oprah

In a 2002 "Christianity Today" article, "The Church of O," the magazine proclaimed Oprah Winfrey "a postmodern priestess-an icon of church-free spirituality." In recent years, Oprah Winfrey has drawn criticism for identifying as a Christian while also asserting on her show that there are other paths to God than just Christianity. Oprah Winfrey's spiritual beliefs draw upon a number of religions and doctrines, which some define as a "New-Age" approach to spirituality.

Instructions

    • 1

Discover your purpose in life. Oprah attributes much of her spiritual awareness to the fact that she believes she was put on the planet for a reason. Much of Oprah's spiritual growth has been the result of discovering that her purpose is much bigger than that of a daytime talk-show host--she has also become a mentor, benefactor and a guide to others.

Focus more on what unites people than what separates people. As Oprah's mentor, Maya Angelou has said, "We are more alike than unalike," and Oprah's spiritual beliefs reflect that sentiment. Oprah says, "One of the mistakes that human beings make is that there is only one way to live, and that we don't accept that there are diverse ways of being in the world and there are millions of ways to be a human being and many paths to what you call God. That her path might be something else and when she gets there she might call it the light."

Have a broad-based approach to spirituality. On her XM radio show, "Soul Series," Oprah consults with a variety of spiritual authors and teachers from all different backgrounds and religions.

    • 4

Give back. Oprah knows the one thing almost all religions can agree on is the importance of charity. Oprah's Angel Network, Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, and countless demonstrations of generosity on her show are just some of the many ways that Oprah gives to people in need.
