Instructions

    • 1

Develop a concept. This is very important. You will need to work on a three-page treatment that describes the show, and your vision. If you cannot get it to more than one page, you may need to take a little extra time to flesh it out.

    • 2

Register your concept. You can visit the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) to register your story, concept and pitch. This is absolutely vital for your intellectual property rights. You will be given a registration number and this must be added to any pitches or treatments that you put together. You will need to upload your treatment in order to register it with the WGA.

    • 3

Write the pilot script. While in many cases you can pitch a concept, most television executives will want to see at the very least, one solid script. If you are not certain on how to write a script to sell a TV show, you can hire a freelance screenwriter to assist you. Once the script is complete, it will need to be registered as well.

    • 4

Work on your pitch. Your three-minute pitch will be the deciding factor on whether or not you will be able to sell your TV show. Spend a lot of time working on the pitch. It is a good idea to videotape yourself so that you can get pointers on what areas of your presentation need improvement.

    • 5

Write a short synopsis. You will need to have a brief synopsis of your project in order to begin querying production companies. This should be around 300 words and should adequately describe the project from start to finish.

    • 6

Start contacting production companies. The next step is to get a production company interested in your project. You can use the Hollywood Creative Directory to locate thousands of companies. Make a list of ones that handle your type of project and begin the query process.

    • 7

Schedule a meeting. If you are located in Hollywood or are willing to travel, you may be able to schedule a meeting with a television executive to sell a TV show. You will be pitching your project during this meeting.
