Anime Styles

Japanese animation, or "anime," is known for encompassing various styles that appeal to different genders and age groups as well as specific groups of people. There are several very specific genres that stand out in the medium.
  1. Shounen

    • Shounen anime is designed for men and boys by focusing on action instead of relationships, often using a mostly male cast of characters. Many popular examples were originally published as manga in the magazine "Shounen Jump" before being adapted into anime, including "Dragon Ball," "One Piece" and "Naruto."

    Shoujo

    • Shoujo anime is made to appeal to girls and women by using romantic drama as well as fantasy elements. Commonly rendered with an emphasis on beauty, popular examples include "Sailor Moon," "Fushigi Yuugi" and "Revolutionary Girl Utena."

    Mecha

    • Giant robots are one of the most enduring and iconic images in anime and a staple of the mecha genre. Examples include the long-running "Gundam" saga, the 1980s series "Macross" (known as "Robotech" in the United States), and "Neon Genesis Evangelion."

    Harem

    • This is a popular romantic subgenre that commonly features an unassuming male who attracts the attention of a group of beautiful women, whose affections he resists. Famous examples include "Tenchi Muyo" and "Love Hina."

    Game Anime

    • Competition in a game or sport is typical of this genre. The game can be a physical sport, as in "Prince of Tennis" or "Slam Dunk," or a card or board game like "Yu-Gi-Oh" or "Hikaru No Go."
