Pigtails, or variations on pigtails, are commonly seen on anime characters. The child version of Mitsuki in Full Moon Wo Sagashite is an example of the pigtails with curls style. Other versions of pigtails in female anime characters include the "odango" double buns next to the ears, like Sailor Moon, or long hair with regular pigtails that do not have curls.
Anime girls are commonly seen wearing ponytails. Examples include Sailor Jupiter from the Sailor Moon series, Haru from the show Reborn and Misuzu from the anime Air. Sailor Jupiter and Haru both have medium length hair for shorter ponytails while Misuzu has very long hair that reaches her waist when up in a ponytail.
Braids are another common anime hairstyle for girls. Braid variations include a single braid down the back or a few braids. The single braid is the most popular style in anime, and usually the hair reaches from the mid-back to the waist in length when braided. An example is Hikaru from Rayearth, who has a single, long braid that reaches her waist.
Bobbed hairstyles in anime are very common as seen with Sakura from the show Naruto, Fuu from Rayearth and Ino from Naruto. The bobbed styles are either wavy or straight, depending on the character and show. Straight bobbed styles are often shorter in the back and longer in the front for female anime characters while wavy bobbed styles are often a similar length around the whole head.
Long hair that is left down is very common in anime hair styles for girls. Examples of the basic long and down styles include Umi from Rayearth, the teen version of Mitsuki from Full Moon Wo Sagashite, and Noel and Karen from Mermaid Melody. Variations on the long and down styles include waves and straight cuts.
