Mounting Instructions for a DIRECTV 5 LNB HD Dish

Satellite dishes allow you to receive encrypted signals from satellites in orbit, which then need to be decrypted by a receiver in order to let you view your television programming. The satellite dish needs to be pointed as precisely as possible toward the satellite in orbit in order to maintain picture quality even during inclement weather. Professional installers can do the job right and guarantee their work, but it is possible to install your dish yourself assuming you have enough gumption.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Bullet level or in-pipe level
  • 7/16-inch socket wrench
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench

  • Electronic satellite meter
  • 4-foot length of RG-6 cable with cable fittings on both ends

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your satellite receiver according to the instructions in the manual and turn it on. Once you have a picture on your screen, you can begin. The software will ask you to input your zip code. This is incredibly important because it determines the tilt, azimuth, and elevation that you will be working with later. Write these numbers down.

    • 2

The mounting post for the dish needs to be mounted in such a way that the signal will not be blocked by any obstacles. You need a clear shot at the satellite in orbit. The azimuth value that you recorded earlier is the direction you will be pointing the dish toward relative to north. That is where the compass comes in. Use it to find a clear view. The post also needs to be as high as possible to avoid any blockage from things such as roof peaks.

    • 3

Mount the post base onto the roof using lag bolts. The base will be secure, but the post should still be loose. Using a bullet level or an in-pipe level provided, make sure the post is perfectly straight up, and tighten the securing bolts on both sides of the base. Now attach each of the struts to the post about 4 inches down, and secure to the roof and the mounting post.

    • 4

Assemble your dish as per the instructions in the included manual, but leave the LNB off for the moment. On the back of the dish there are markings indicating the tilt that the dish needs to be set to. Using the numbers your recorded earlier, set the dish to the correct tilt and tighten the bolts. Similarly, on the bottom mount for the dish are markings for the elevation. Again, using the numbers you recorded for the elevation, set the dish mount correctly and tighten the bolts.

    • 5

Connect your satellite meter to the LNB using your RG-6 coaxial cable. Make sure to run it through the dish's arm. Now set the dish on top of the mounting post and slowly rotate it until the meter reads 99 percent. Once this is achieved, tighten the bolts that secure the dish to the post and you're ready to wire your dish to your home theater system.
