Create a list of channels and services that are important to you, including specific channels.
View the various packages offered by DirecTV. Visit the DirecTV website and click on the link "TV Packages." Select one of the packages offered to subscribers by clicking on the "View Packages" link,or build your own package by clicking "Get Started."
Decide on the package you want. For example, are there specific channels or types of channels you want? Select whether you want channels in high definition (HD), which will improve the visual quality of the program. Select whether you want a digital video recorder (DVR) service, which allows you to record TV shows to watch at a more convenient time.
Read the fine print. Look for any costs that might not be readily obvious and pay attention to the length of the contract. Many DirecTV contracts require signing up for 24 consecutive months to earn the discounts offerred. New contracts often include an installation fee, dish receiver fee and paying for a receiver for each TV in the house. Pay attention to any early termination fees.
Sign up for DirectTV. Use the online "Check Out" option or call their toll-free telephone number to order your DirectTV package. Even though it might save you time by ordering online, sometimes it can be helpful to speak to a phone representative for help answering any questions you might have regarding your order.
Pay for the DirecTV package. Provide DirecTV with your credit card number so they can bill you for your first month. They will then use the card number to bill you each month for the duration of your contract.
Schedule an installation. Select a time frame when you are available for the DirecTV installation person to set up your cable.
