How to Create a TV Commercial Script

A powerful means of advertising, television commercials reach millions of people in a strong visual and auditory manner. The first step in creating a commercial is coming up with the concept and script. A script is necessary so everyone involved, including the cast, crew and the company that makes the product, has a clear idea of what is going on. It will also indicate how to set up each shot for the best commercial possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a look at your basic demographic. Who are your base consumers? Break down the age range, gender, interests and average income. Think about what you want your commercial to say. In other words, what is the message you'd like to convey?

    • 2

Brainstorm a concept that will showcase your product, brand or service. Come up with a couple of different concepts and decide which one will best reach your target audience.

    • 3

Write an outline of your story concept. Have a couple of people review the concept and give their opinions. Make changes as needed to ensure it hits the target audience.

    • 4

Write the script out in a two-column format with audio on the left side and video on the right. For each moment of the commercial, list what consumers will see on the screen as well as what they will hear someone saying, on screen or off (voice-over).

    • 5

Write the title of the commercial, product and length of the commercial at the top of the script.
