How to Purchase Web TV

Web TV began in the mid-1990s when Sony and Phillips created the first Web TV receiver boxes. Microsoft bought Web TV Networks Inc. in 1997 and trademarked the concept. In 2004, Microsoft replaced the original Web TV boxes (hardware) with the new MSN TV2, but the company continues to support the old Web TV customers.
  1. Web TV to MSN TV2

    • Microsoft switched from its original Web TV to its newer MSN TV2, which features faster connection speeds and a broadband connection without a PC. Customers are supplied with an MSN TV2 player which connects to the television and cable modem, DSL connection or gateway.

    Purchasing the MSN TV2 Box

    • The MSN TV2 Internet & Media Player device is not sold by Microsoft directly. It is available through Amazon, High-Tech Office and other electronics dealers. As of 2010, prices range from $150 to $200. While Microsoft does not sell the receivers, it does suggest buying from S2G, or Sales Services Group. S2G can be contacted at 800-683-8320.

    Monthly Subscriptions

    • Microsoft offers MSN TV2 access for as low as $9.95 a month or $99.95 a year as of 2010 for those who already have an Internet connection. If no Internet connection is available, the subscription runs $21.95 a month or $199.95 a year. The subscription includes digital media access, Internet, email and related features that the customer can now access from his TV. After purchasing the receiver and setting it up, the on-screen prompts take the customer through the process of setting up an account. Then the customer contacts Microsoft at 866-GO-MSNTV (866-466-7688) and the account is verified and completed.
