Learning the 12 Main Hand Signs of Naruto

The twelve basic Naruto hand signs are an integral part of the hit Japanese TV animation show. Each one is named after an animal from the Chinese zodiac. The hand signs are known as ''seals'' and are used to perform specific ninja techniques called ''jutsu.'' Check on Internet search engines to find pictures and videos of the seals.       Rat is the first sign of the Chinese zodiac.

      Look at a picture of the 12 seals and copy the hand positions. There are videos showing how to do the hand signs. Watch the anime series and copy the characters as they use the seals.

      Ne, or the rat, is shown by using your whole left hand to hold your first two fingers of the right hand. The third and fourth fingers on the right hand should be visible. Fold those two fingers down.

      Ushi is the Japanese name for ox or cow.

      The second seal is the cow sign. Hold your left hand out in front of you. With your palm facing down, space all your fingers out. Put all the fingers of your right hand between the fingers of the left hand. Fold the two middle fingers down. Keep the last finger and the index finger upright.

      Tiger seal.

      Put your two hands together as if clapping or praying. Interlock the ring finger and the little finger with the same fingers from the other hand and fold them down. Keep the thumb, index finger and middle finger pointing upwards. This is the Tora, or tiger seal.

      The rabbit sign is known as the U seal.

      The fourth seal is the rabbit. Make two fists. Extend the index finger of your right hand and the pinky of the left hand. Place the pinky of the left hand on top of the pointing index finger of the right hand. The thumb of the right hand should rest on the knuckles of the left hand.

      Tatsu is the fifth hand seal of the Chinese zodiac.

      The fifth seal is the dragon sign. Face both palms toward your body. Interlock all the fingers together in a clasping position. Lift both thumbs up, slightly crossing the tips. Point the two little fingers down, making a triangle shape.

      Mi is the snake hand seal.

      Clasp your hands again. Point your knuckles up, and leave a space between your wrists. This is the snake sign.

      Uma is the horse hand seal used in Naruto.

      To form the horse sign, close both hands with the backs facing out, away from the body. Stretch both index fingers upwards to meet each other to form a triangle. Fold both thumbs down behind the index fingers. Interlock the knuckles of the remaining three fingers.

      Hitsuji is the ram seal.

      To do the ram seal, put your palms together with fingers pointing up. Slide the right hand up so that the fingers are slightly higher than the left hand. Separate the last two fingers on the left hand from the other fingers. Fold the last two fingers from the right hand over the space created on the left hand. Fold the last two fingers from the left hand down.

      Monkey seal is known as Saru in Japanese.

      Hold your left hand horizontally in front of your body with the palm up. All fingers should be together. Place your right hand on top of your left hand so that the palms are touching. Your elbows will stick out at the sides. This is the monkey sign.

      The tenth seal is Tori or the bird sign.

      The bird sign is done by putting both palms together with fingers pointing up. Open the hands so that the tips of all fingers are touching making an open triangular shape. Put the tips of the thumbs together and point them toward your body. Fold down your first and third finger on both hands. Keep the middle fingers and the little fingers pointing upwards meeting each other in the open triangle shape.

      The Inu seal is one of the simpler hand signs of Naruto

      Close your left hand into a fist shape with your elbow out and palm facing down. Put your open right hand over the fist. This is the dog seal.

      The twelfth seal is the pig or boar sign.

      I is the name for the boar seal. Hold both hands out in front of you with elbows out and both palms up. Push the fingers together so that the backs of both hands are leaning on each other and the tips of the fingers are pointing up. Fold all the fingers down so that the tips of the fingers are touching the palms. Bring the wrists together and point the knuckles and thumbs down.
