The superhuman powers of these fictional ninjas may owe more to science fiction and role-playing games than to real-world culture or religion, but the roots of these concepts are indeed found in reality. Hand gestures, for instance, are central to Buddhism; they are often known by the Sanskrit term "mudras." Naruto's specific gestures, called "seals," are based on the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac; performing them requires only nimble fingers.

     Place your hands together, palm to palm, with the heels of your hands facing outward, toward your opponent(s).

     Stretch your thumbs out, back toward your body.

     Separate your palms slightly, keeping your fingertips together, and curl the two ring fingers inward, overlapping the knuckles. The fingertips should point down, with the backs of each finger lying along the palm of the opposite hand; the right finger is on the outside, toward your opponent.

     Keep your other fingers aligned and straight, with fingertips touching.
