How to Learn Scripting Online

Scripting involves creating program codes that allow a user to control one or more software applications. There are several languages that have been developed to enable these "scripts" to be written. They are called scripting languages and they include Visual Basic, C Shell, PHP, Rexx, Java Script, Tcl, LotusScript, Perl, Python, XSL, Korn Shell and DSSSL among others. These languages can be used to produce programs to design websites that allow for searchers and users to interact with a firm, view information and carry out transactions.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the requirements for scripting courses, the duration of the course and training fees from commercial training sites. "Do It Yourself" sites like W3 Schools have free tutorials for web developers and scripting students. They allow you to download manuals and templates that offer scripting lessons. Commercial sites like Steve-Parker, Seed and Learning Tree require you to pay for the online books, manuals and lesson templates using debit/credit cards. After gathering enough information, select a programming language that suits your needs.

Be sure to have or purchase a computer with the latest capabilities; this will enable you to develop script codes, connect to the Internet and download training manuals and sample scripts.

    • 3

Establish an Internet connection. You will require a reliable Internet connection during the duration of your course. Contact your nearest telephone and data service provider to get a connection. You may be required to purchase a modem in case you would like to access wireless Internet, especially for mobile learners.

    • 4

For online courses that require payments for training manuals and additional resources, register and make payments for them. Obtain a registration certificate or student number for verification of legitimate registration by the institution offering the course. Print out the certificate and keep it in a safe place.

    • 5

Download and install a compiler on your computer. Depending on the programming language you have chosen, download and install a compiler/programmer's interface (provided by the institution offering the training) that will enable you to key in codes and rectify errors in the scripts you develop. Compilers can be tested using sample scripts for the language to be learned. If the compiler successfully executes sample script codes, proceed with the learning process.

Learn basic scripting first to lay a foundation. Learners interested in scripting for web development are required to learn more than one script language as they are usually complementary. For instance, web developers have to learn basic HTML before learning Java Script, as concepts of Basic HTML are used in Java Script which is more detailed.
