How to Format a Script Cover

Screenplays follow a specific format, which helps to distinguish amateur writers from professional writers and makes scripts easier to read. The basic format for a screenplay includes slug lines that delineate where and when a scene is taking place, action lines that describe what happens in the scene and character names and dialogue for the people in the story. A cover page provides basic information to a reader, such as the title and draft date of the screenplay.

Instructions

    • 1

Center the title of your script about one-third of the way from the top of the page. The title is written in bold type with uppercase letters, though some writers use normal capitalization.

    • 2

Double-space and center the word "by" in lowercase letters directly beneath the title, and then double-space and write your name. Double-space twice, type the date of the draft and center it below your name.

    • 3

Write the name, address and phone number of your agent or manager (if applicable) in the lower left-hand corner of the page. Write the Writer's Guild registration number directly beneath, if your script is registered with the WGA. This information should be left-justified so that it aligns at the left margin.
