Type the page number, beginning on page two, on line three of the page, at column 75. Skip down to line 7 to begin the body of the script. Use Courier font, that types 10 characters per horizontal inch, and six characters per vertical inch.
Set the left margin for the scene headings, scene descriptions, and action at column 15. Set the right margin at column 73.
Type the scene headings in all capitals, with "INT." indicating interior scenes, and "EXT." representing exterior scenes. Follow that with the scene location, a dash and the time of day that the scene occurs. For example, "INT. BIG WILLIE'S HOUSE - DAY" would be set inside Big Willie's house in the daytime.
Insert a blank line after the scene heading and write vivid, concise scene and character descriptions and action. Capitalize all the letters in each new character's name, when you first introduce that character in the script. Single space between lines within the narrative, and double-space between paragraphs.
Insert a blank line between the narrative and a character's name when that character has dialogue. Write the character's name in all capital letters, beginning on column 35. Single space after the name, and write the dialogue, single-spaced, with a left margin of column 25 and a right margin of column 58.
Continue the body of each script page down to line 60, on which you place any scene transitions, such as "CONTINUED." Avoid directing while you write. Use specific, present-tense action words and straightforward terminology. For example, instead of writing, "CLOSE-UP of a squirrel eating a nut," write, "A fat-cheeked squirrel nibbles on a fallen pecan."
Keep the total length of the script between 90 and 120 pages.
