Start with the basic requirements. You won't be able to be on the show if you've been convicted of anything, having any restraining orders or are running for public office in the next 12 months. Other than those minor details, as long as you are a U.S. resident 21 years or older and are willing to submit a 3-minute video detailing your wretched profession, you're set to begin the application process.
Log on to the "Dirty Jobs" application section of the Discovery Channel Web site. Download the application. Print it out, fill it in and send it in along with your video tape. The producers encourage you to take your time filling out the answers thoroughly and to feel free to use more than the space provided on the form, if necessary.
Make a video tape. Keep it under 3 minutes, as the producers note that anything longer won't be considered. Be yourself, but keep things appropriate because the tape could be used on TV. Talk to the camera as if it was Mike Rowe himself. Tell your story, why you deserve to be on the show and how being on the show and meeting Mike Rowe would affect your life. Label your tape clearly.
Be willing to clear your schedule. You may need to travel on short notice and be available for two days during production.
